Association between Body Composition and Pulmonary Function by Measuring Resting Metabolic Rate Using Indirect Calorimetry in Chronic Respiratory Disease Patients
نویسندگان
چکیده
Patients with chronic respiratory diseases have been found to develop malnutrition as a result of enhanced resting metabolic rate (RMR) associated with exacerbated ventilatory impairment. It is therefore necessary to measure each individual’s required amount of energy in order to provide nutritional support. There are few reports regarding the RMR of patients with chronic respiratory diseases that have used indirect calorimetry. We investigated the association between body composition, pulmonary function, and dyspnea grade by measuring RMR using indirect calorimetry in 23 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and 21 patients with interstitial pneumonia (IP). We found no increase in RMR in COPD patients without any decrease in weight or muscle mass and increase in RMR in IP patients. Fat mass was suggested to influence RMR in IP patients. Early nutritional support for COPD patients in whom no reduction in body weight or muscle mass is seen may possibly prevent RMR enhancement and malnutrition. RMR measurements using indirect calorimetry are an easy means of ascertaining the amount of energy required for nutritional support, and are easy enough to use when evaluating the nutritional status of patients with chronic respiratory diseases. Relation between Healthy Eating Index and Resting Metabolic Rate
Background and Objectives: Previouse studies demonstrated inverse association between healthy eating index and alot of chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease and cancer and mortality. Since there are limited study about relation between healthy eating index and reting metabolic rate. considering the results of some studies about the relation between weight, body composition and blood suge...
متن کاملA validated disease specific prediction equation for resting metabolic rate in underweight patients with COPD
Malnutrition is a serious condition in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Successful dietary intervention calls for calculations of resting metabolic rate (RMR). One disease-specific prediction equation for RMR exists based on mainly male patients. To construct a disease-specific equation for RMR based on measurements in underweight or weight-losing women and men with COPD, RMR was m...
متن کاملFamilial Resemblance of Body Composition, Physical Activity, and Resting Metabolic Rate in Pre-School Children
Background: Although parental obesity is a well-established predisposing factor for the development of obesity, associations between regional body compositions, resting metabolic rates (RMR), and physical activity (PA) of parents and their pre-school children remain unknown. The objective of this study was to investigate parent-child correlations for total and regional body compositions, restin...
متن کاملIncreased energy expenditure in cystic fibrosis is associated with specific mutations.
1. Measurements of resting metabolic rate were made by open-circuit indirect calorimetry in 78 unrelated cystic fibrosis patients and 30 healthy control subjects. The aims of this study were: (i) to determine the range of variability in resting metabolic rate in cystic fibrosis, (ii) to relate this to pulmonary function and body size, and (iii) to investigate the hypothesis that, in cystic fibr...
متن کاملEnergy expenditure and rib cage-abdominal motion in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
The resting energy expenditure (REE) was measured by indirect calorimetry in 10 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in stable clinical state and in 10 normal subjects. In order to avoid artefactually increased values, REE was obtained from prolonged measurements in steady state using a ventilated hood, without facial apparatus. The REE of COPD patients was significantly i...
